Motion Comics Problem
So I’ve been trying to find more motion comics to watch and referr y blog, but there is one problem. There are no more! I’ve been doing research and i have learned that alot of different people believe that motion comics can be related to movies such as “Watchmen” and “Batman”. Which leads me to believe that the mystery behind motion comics is this…………..there is no such thing a comic in motion because comics can’t be in motion. So after coming up with this and looking at my research and even referringt to Scott McCloud I believe if a comic has motion, music, and other type of movie parts it has to be either a movie or short film.
“Maus” Character’s…..
Ok so, just recently viewing “Life is Beautiful” i decided to dive into the world of Holocaust literature. I read Maus a book that uses different types of animals to represent different ethnic group during the time of the Holocaust. The main two ethnic groups I’m focusing on are the Jewish people and the German and/or Nazi. The animals they use are cats and mice, which is a very simple, but extreme comparison. They make the Jewish people the ice in the book, because during the time of the Holocaust Jews were referred to as rats and other rodents. The Germans were cats because of course the cats chase the mice. This was used as a comparison not only in this book, but by many other authors and it was used during the time period as well.
Life is Beautiful…..
I just watched “Life Is Beautiful” in my English class and its a great movie about the Holocaust. Its a great story about a father and his son in a concentration camp and while they are their his father keeps telling his son they are their to play a game to win a tank. Its interesting because the movie is made into kinda a comedy movie and romance movie. After I watched this movie my English teacher challenged me to read comics about the Holocaust and I came across “Maus” which is a comic based on the Holocaust. I will be reading this book and posting more ideas about character in “Maus” in my next post.
Motion Comics
Motion comics are very interesting comics…………whoooooaaaaa, wait did he just say “motion comics”? Indeed that is what I said because its true, as i put in my last post their are motion comics like the comics “Broken Saints”. Their is just one major question about these comics and that is, are you still reading the comic if its in motion? I put in my last post that you are actually reading it because it still has the same basic comic ideas in it, but recently I’ve been thinking about everything that goes into a motion comic and a movie. When you look at it that way they both are basically the same thing, so it just messed with my brian because i thought i had it all figured out. So I decide to enlist help from one of the greatest comic writers of all time, Scott McCloud. I recently e-mailed about the idea and hopefully I’ll get a great answer to this comfusing question….
Moving Comics
Please enjoy the following comic i found online called “Broken Saints”. So my question to you that have watched it is, is this still a comic since its moving? Please comment and let me know your ideas on it. After I watched this comic i honestly thought I was watching a movie, but at the same time the creators of this comic call it a comic. I thought about it more and it still have the same comic values that a regular comic has in it. It has the art, the text, and different frames in it. I’m currently stuck on this idea and still studying it, so please comment and tell me your ideas.
Check the Blogroll……
Hey! check out the blogroll just added a new link to web comics on “Web Comics Nation” it was pretty cool what i found too. I still need to look more into the ideas of web comics before making a final choice on them in the end though…..
Death Note 1 Down!!!
Just finished reading the very first Death Note book and it i could really see the different ideas Scott McCloud was talking about…….
I’m to the next book and continuing to explore more of Scott McCloud’s ideas….
McCloud’s Basic Ideas on Comics
Reading Scott McCloud’s book and reading the first DeathNote book has really pushed me to dig deeper into this idea of comics. McCloud’s idea of comics, as I explained in my last post, is a juxtaposed pictorial and other images in deliberate sequence. He’s basically stating that comics are a type of sequential art and what happens in one frame to another must be thought about by the reader and their mind.
Now at the moment I am reading Tsugumi Ohba’s series “DeathNote” and I understand what McCloud is saying in his definition. While reading “DeathNote” I’ve noticed how important the individual frames are and what they depict, but i have also noticed the importance of the space between each frame. Its important because the space between the frames is the time where the reader must think about what is happening and what is being said in the previous frame. So i personally think that the space in between each frame is actually sorta a time frame where the reader can think in a split second about what is happening. In a book like “DeathNote ” the space between each frame is very important because if you do not kinda think about what is happening then you will fall behind what is happening to Light (DeathNote’s main character) and his “battle” to rid the world of evil people.
Another thing that is very important in a graphic novel is the art and movements of the characters. McCloud says that the art and movements could be called “sequential art”. A basic definition of this kinda art is what i said at the beginning, its art that moves! The only thing is the art does not move in each individual fame, the art moves as you go from frame to frame. So as you read each and see each picture you can kinda see the movements of the characters. Once again in “DeathNote” I think this is a very important concept because i think to fully understand the characters its important to see there movements and expressions.
So two basic ideas of a graphic novel are the frames and there space, and the sequential art. These two simple ideas seem so simple and easy, but you must really dig deep and thinking about what they mean or your comic and/or graphic novel could be a failure. More ideas to come on Scott McCloud’s ideas later……….
The Definition of a Graphic Novel or Comic Book
Lately I been reading Scott McCloud’s book “Understanding Comic’s: The Invisible Art” and i have to say his definition of comics and graphic novels is quite interesting. He says that comics are basically a “juxtaposed pictorial and other images in deliberate sequence”. More detail to come……
